It works by sensing a build up of pressure inside the machine and shuts the motor down. When the trigger is pulled and water starts flowing, then pressure drops and the motor starts up again.

Benefits of a TSS:
- Energy Efficiency: Reduces power consumption by shutting off the machine when not in use, leading to energy savings
- Extended Motor Life: Minimizes wear and tear on the motor by cutting power in idle moments, prolonging the motor's lifespan
- Enhanced Safety: Adds a safety layer by preventing unintended running, reducing the risk of accidents
- Convenience and Ease of Use: Simplifies operation, as the machine only runs when actively used, enhancing user convenience
- Reduced Noise Pollution: Decreases noise by stopping the machine in idle times, contributing to a quieter environment
Potential causes of failure:
- Wear & Tear: Over time the part may just wear out. Depending on your usage it could last years before this is an issue.
- Mineral build-up: Minerals from hardwater can build up inside the pump, causing the pressure switch to get stuck
- This makes it either fail to turn the motor on or off entirely, or worse, only slowing the pressure switch which can cause damage in the microswitch, an electrical component.
Maintenance:
- You can try to lubricate the part before replacing it entirely! Most models using this TSS kit can utilize the instructions below.
TSS Lubrication Process
Prepare:
Start by removing all accessories and parts from the machine, then remove the pressure washer from the cart or wall-mount by disengaging the two latches on the side.
Tools:
8"+ Phillips head screwdriver or screw gun
Procedure:
- Lay the machine down with the front side facing down.
- Start by using a long Phillips head screwdriver (at least 8") to remove the screws all located along the edge of the backside of the pressure washer.
- There are typically 8-10 total screws holding the front and back covers together.
- Pull off the back cover.
- If there is a hose reel on your machine, the hose reel will come off with the back cover.
- Locate and remove additional Philips screws holding the pump to the front casing.
- Skip this step if your TSS is accessible from the back.
- Find the TSS module that is pressure-fit into the pump body.
- It looks like a black L-shaped box with a wire leading to a split, one end going to the motor and another going to the power switch.
- This is tight, and it may feel like it's going to break. Use a screwdriver as a lever if that helps, but it is going to come out before it breaks.
- Pop the black module out of the hex-head nut that is screwed into the pump body.
- Carefully remove the hex nut with a socket wrench. Sizes vary, but most commonly you'll find a 24mm works.
- Small interconnected parts are behind this nut, so be sure to keep track of them all and how they fit together. Taking a photograph is the best way to be sure you get everything back together correctly.
- Soak all these removed parts in vinegar or CLR (Calcium Lime Rust Remover) for 20 minutes.
- After the soak, rinse the parts, then lubricate with white lithium grease or silicone grease.
- Reassemble the machine by working steps 1-7 backwards.
